What are the symptoms of a dirty mass airflow sensor? My Max has done 108,000km. It certainly doesn't feel like it has any performance issues. There's the odd occasion where the engine doesn't start the first time I turn the key, but I don't know whether that has anything to do with the MAF.

Well its never going to hurt cleaning something that's had use. LMFAO at that video, only an American could turn a simple 3 step process into an 11minute video. I had to skip through it in disbelief to check that there wasn't some major bit of maintenance I hadn't take into consideration.

1) Remove MAFS
2) Spray on cleaner
3) Reattach MAFS

sh1t that was hard. Okay I read somewhere that the MAFS cleaner stuff is just electrical contact cleaner - where can I go to get this in Auckland (cheap as possible). Also was thinking of doing the throttle body at the same time and read somewhere about getting 'throttle body cleaner'... uh is it just me or does it seem like B/s that every different part of the engine requires a specifically marketed cleaner... what really is 'throttle body cleaner'? Spray N Wipe?

Step 2.5 of cleanning your MAF is to let your MAF try out - if you plug in back and go for a drive with it wet when the hot wire gets energised you could fry your MAF .

As for the Throttlebody cleaner I have also heard you can strip the teflon coating if you use the wrong one, some people use carb cleaner but seing as I didn't have either I just brought the TB cleaner

Not everyone would know how to remove it... Hell, not everyone would know what a maf sensor is!

maf sensor is the thing with the plug that sits on your other thing that measures other stuff to let the electrical thingy know so it can control the spray of some other stuff...

In short; this thing (look for the pink label):
