Post Speaker Sizes
Hi,

anybody know what the sizes are front and rear door speakers. To upgrade them, is it simply a case of unscrewing the old ones and replacing with new ones of the same size or are mods required?

for the front, was thinking of running new splits - might use the factory tweeters though.

For the back, maybe a set of two or three ways.

Any ideas - its got be a quick, simple and cheap upgrade.

cheers

If they are the same size as the A33's, they would be 6.5" door speakers all round.

I think you have to make new holes to mount the speakers, but as Joe said, BLKMAX would probably know.

Good luck!

6.5" all around......you would need to build/fabricate mounts for them though......or do what I did.....destroyed the stock speaker (which is built onto the mount), and simply screwed my new ones onto them.....the aftermarket mounting basket may be slightly larger than the mount but the speaker would still be able to screwed on..... sorry no pics of my installation....

oh you may need a dremmel or jig-saw to cut out the stock speaker from the mount and to do a bit of clearance for the aftermarket speaker's magnet

Anyone contemplating replacing their stock speakers, but cannot afford to do so,or could not be bothered due to the work involved, and the fact most aftermarket speakers require an amp to power them properly, a good option is to just add quality tweeters that you can grab on ebay or from Jaycar(they have a terrific silk dome set with built in crossovers inline with the speaker wires selling for around $25) and it makes a massive difference.

Just hook them up by tapping the midwoofer wires at the doors.

The fronts go in the tweeter housing next to the side mirrors. They fit perfectly.
Just secure them by wrapping lots of blutack around the tweeter once placed up against the tweeter housing.

The rears can go anywhere you please.I put mine on the rear parcel shelf.

I tried it and the system now sounds ten times better and very close to midpriced aftermarket component sets costing hundreds of dollars.

Once you try this method, you may like the sound so much that you probably will not need to go aftermarket, unless you are a picky audiophile perfectionist.

Before the upgrade, my cd's sounded so dull I hated it, because I have the ST-L Maxima, so no tweeters unlike the Ti/TiL versions.

Now my dire straits "love over gold" cd sounds absolutely amazing, with every instrument crystal clear and surprising good thumping bass from the stock midwoofers.

theo

Good advice Theo, adding some well placed tweeters to an existing system can make a significant improvement for minimal $$. Not sure I would worry about adding tweeters at the rear for fear of cancelation/combing effects at high frequency, but certainly go for the fronts!

the wiring is supposed to be all there though....I simply placed my dls tweets in the location secured them with double sided 3M automotive tape and re-installed the tweeter housing....fitted snugly...however I had separate wiring done due to the component set's crossover....

The aussie versions do not have the wiring there. Looked for them, but no luck.

Pretty easy though to run speaker cable from the tweeter housing to the woofers in the front doors after taking out the door trim.

The Jaycar tweeters are just beautiful, not harsh like many other tweeters, but I am sure if you looked on ebay, you can grab some premium grade tweeters from the likes of focal, boston, JBL etc. that should outperform the jaycars.

Just waiting for the JBL MS-8(ealry August according to the distributor) and then it should be a different ball game again.

Will likely add a 4 channel amp(new JBL amps due in August too, and the word on DIYMA is they will set a new benchmark in performance)

im gonna put a small 2000 watt bass upgrade and change the 4 stock speakers to components and drop 1500 watts on them.

Don't you love audio power figures quoted in P-P with a .0001s duration, like those cheap shelf units that have 2000W plastered over the front of their small paper cone speakers!!
Real (RMS) 1500W on the door speakers would probably tear the trim off.

Have youhad a look at the JBL MS-8 as an alternative to cutting up your dash.

I have ordered the MS-8, should be arriving from the states within the next few days.
They say it is awsome. And the best part is you can take it from car to car after you sell your current car.

dude have you seen my other car

1500watts on 4 door speakers is what i meant btw,
a expensive component 6.5" wont take more than 350 rms in my experience

I think you would struggle to find 6.5in speakers with a power handling ability of 350WRMS, 350W Peak is more in the ball park.

haven't seen your other car.

would be interested to know what splits you are using with a power rating of 350WRMS, the best I could find was around 150WRMS.
Also, what sub are you using, 2000WRMS is possible, but you will need to go with competition subs with a price tag of around $2k each.
Also, what amps and how are you powering them with the 200A+ required for this sort of power?

I specifically bought the MS-8 so I can use one of the inputs as an auxiliary port and hook up my MP3 player to play all my flac encoded music files.

Should sound pretty awesome, reading all the reviews on the net.
Will be in my hands next week!

Thats right, One of the inputs, I think it is input 8 (rca jacks) on the JBL ms-8, is specifically designed to be used as an auxilliary input, either for ipods or mp3 players.

Just listened to one today (also imported from the usa recently) connected a stock system in a camry.
I was floored by the sound. Just phenomenal.

The clarity, imaging, and soundstage are just fantastic.

And I'd say if you just use the stock speakers with maybe adding good aftermarket tweeters, the
built in 20w rms amp of the ms-8 is ample power to blow your eardrums out.

And best of all, zero noise, at any volume, whether playing cd, or listening to mp3 player.

you should get on of mine agent if you don't care about music tweaking like all these audiophiles!

i also have no noise on mine as it is a proper aux input. its basically does what an MS-8 without all the equalizing functions... suits me, i know nothing about equalizing music... :D

we had an apple ipod at home... no one used it because it came with the shittiest instructions, had no display besides a stupid LED that changed colour, there were no markings on the buttons just this silly round thing that did nothing when pressed AND it was 512mb everything else back then was a bit bigger and a bit cheaper...

and just to use it you need to put there software on the computer! why cant i just drag and drop apple? EH is that not good enough for you...

pitty if my first impression wasnt ruined by that first one, it may have worked out different.... mabey i should forgive and forget?

yer i should get one... but then i need an ipod... i kinda like the SD card part of it! i have a few SD cards

it is pretty sh*t i will admit it, sometimes the background noise makes me want to listen to radio...

You can get mp3 players with sd card slots, like the creative X-fi, cowon s9(one of the best sounding mp3's, better than all ipods according to net reviews) etc.

I will probably get the cowon s9, also plays back videos as a bonus

??? why on earth would you get a device with only 8gb of storage???

why not get an ipod touch with 32gb??? bigger screen, better interface, better contruction/materials the list goes on... plus it also does video, on a bigger screen.

it may do better sound but how much better could it be?

SD cards are gay anyway
